Dr. Ken Coates is a Canadian historian focused on the history of the Canadian North and Indigenous peoples. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo.  Born in Alberta, Coates was raised in Whitehorse, Yukon. He received his B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia, and his M.A. from the University of Manitoba, and has held the position of Dean of Arts at the University of New Brunswick (1997-2000) and the University of Saskatchewan (2001–2003). He taught at the University of Waikato in New Zealand from 1995-1997, and the University of Victoria, British Columbia from 1986-1991. In 1991 he was appointed the first Vice-President Academic at the University of Northern British Columbia.
