This year the library will connect you with local agencies to support your literacy needs.
Literacy is more than knowing how to read and write. It is about having the skills to function well in society. According to Statistics Canada a literate person is one who "has the information processing skills necessary to use the printed materials commonly encountered at work, at home and in the community."

    Did you know . . .
    * 4 out of 10 adult Canadians do not have basic literacy skills
    * Over half of the adults in Waterloo Region, aged 16 and over, fall into the two lowest literacy levels
    * Literacy pays. Increasing national literacy skills by only 1 per cent would generate an increase in Canada's GPA by some $18 billion each year!

Let KPL connect you with our community partners at this year's The Word On The Street.

KPL Writers' Collective
Hosted/Presented by Sheila Bauman

Members of the KPL Writers' Collective will read excerpts of their work. From poets and writers of fiction, to published novelists and journalists, the KPL Writers' Collective has a number of talented members.  Come out and hear some wonderful stories and meet the writers.
The Writers' Collective provides the opportunity for writers to meet in a neutral location and talk shop.  Each month, members share their work, give and receive feedback and generally support one another through the writing process.
The Collective includes writers from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, both published and unpublished.  Members write short stories, poetry, newspaper and magazine articles and fiction from diverse genres including historical romance, fantasy, adventure and children's and teen literature.

Copies of the KPL Writers' Collective anthology will be available for purchase along with published books by Collective members.

Visit www.kpl.org early September to see a list of readers, complete with bios and titles of books.
