If you ask her, Rebecca Bender will tell you that, like Bird, she can laugh and goof around. Her friends will tell you that, like Giraffe, she can be quite dignified and reserved. Rebecca made a big splash with her first picture book, Giraffe and Bird, which won the Blue Spruce Award and was shortlisted for the CBA Libris Award Book of the Year and the SYRCA Shining Willow Award. A graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, Rebecca works as a designer and art director. She lives in Burlington, Ontario, with her husband and their daughter Robyn.

Don’t Laugh at Giraffe

Giraffe and Bird spat, squabble, and get on each other’s nerves. There’s nothing the irrepressible Bird likes more than to have a laugh at the expense of his dignified friend, and one thirsty day at the water hole, he gets his chance. Giraffe’s awkward attempt to reach the water without getting his hooves wet raises a snicker from a flamingo, a chortle from a zebra, and a howl from a hippo.
