About Us

Vancouver's The Word On The Street is Western Canada's largest celebration of words and reading.  Held on the last Sunday of September at the downtown Library Square, The Word On The Street Vancouver promotes books and authors with free exhibits, performances and hands-on activities for a wide range of ages and interests.

Annually, Vancouver's The Word On The Street attracts an estimated 35,000 visitors, and hundreds of participating exhibitors, authors, performers and volunteers to Library Square for literary readings, cookbook demonstrations, music, contests, panels and much more.

The purpose and mandate of The Vancouver Book and Magazine Fair Society is to:

  • Foster an awareness and appreciation of the printed word in our culture;
  • Involve the residents of Vancouver in a celebration of writing and reading;
  • Promote the importance of literacy in the lives of all Canadians.

The Society's programming mandate each year includes attracting a line-up of internationally celebrated and recognized Canadian literary talents to the festival. In past years we have featured scientist, environmentalist and writer David Suzuki; Canada's most well-known cartoonist, Lynn Johnston; Vancouver author Joy Kogawa; Greenpeace co-founder Rex Weyler; poet, Evelyn Lau; humourist Gordon Kirkland; Joel Bakan and Susan Musgrave to name a few.
